A Word from Pastor AJ: Becoming a Racial Justice Leader

July 2024

Dear Advocates for Racial Justice,

I greet you with a heart full of hope and determination. In these times of profound social transformation, the call for racial justice resounds louder than ever. As Unitarian Universalists, we are uniquely positioned to answer this call and to lead with courage and conviction. Our commitment to justice, equity, and compassion compels us to act, not just as participants, but as leaders in the struggle for racial justice.

The Imperative of Leadership
Racial justice is not a destination, but a journey that requires continuous learning, unlearning, and action. It is a journey that demands leaders who are willing to challenge the status quo, confront systemic inequities, and inspire others to do the same. As we navigate this path, we must recognize that leadership in racial justice is both a privilege and a responsibility.

Cultivating Leadership Within Ourselves
To become effective racial justice leaders, we must first focus within, which is what we are asking you to do, both personally and as a community / congregational system with UURJ: acknowledging our own biases, understanding our privileges, and committing to personal growth. And we must educate ourselves about the histories and experiences of marginalized communities, and listen deeply to the stories of those most affected by racial injustice. True leadership begins with self-awareness and a genuine desire to learn and evolve.

Building a Community of Leaders
Our strength lies in our collective action. By fostering a community that supports and uplifts emerging leaders, we can create a powerful movement for change. This involves creating spaces for dialogue, offering mentorship, and providing resources for leadership development. It also means celebrating the diverse talents and perspectives within our community and encouraging each other to step into leadership roles.

Taking Action
Leadership in racial justice is not confined to grand gestures; it is found in everyday actions and decisions. It is in the conversations we have, the choices we make, and the ways we show up for one another. Whether it is advocating for policy changes, participating in protests, educating others, or simply standing in solidarity with marginalized communities, every action counts.

A Call to Leadership
I invite each of you to embrace the role of a racial justice leader both in your local community / congregation, and with UURJ. Reflect on how you can contribute to this vital work and take concrete steps to make a difference. Engage with UURJ, becoming a leader within our UURJ Community by joining our newly forming Vision & Values Team or volunteering in some other capacity. It is only with your commitment that we can build a more just and equitable world, one where every person is valued and respected. Let us move forward with resolve and unity, knowing that our collective efforts can bring about meaningful change. Together, we can become the leaders that our world so desperately needs.

If you would like to know more about our Vision & Values Team, please contact me directly. You can reach me during our Virtual Office Hours M-Th 9-1pm MT, via phone or text @ 714-699-3313, or email by clicking Here.

In solidarity and with unwavering commitment,

AJ
